“Around this crossroads is bloody ground,” reads the old granite-based marker where the battlefield of Gaines’ Mill overlaps the battlefield of Cold Harbor. Besieged twice, Richmond was attacked by McClellan in 1862 from the east, then by Grant from the north two years later. Battles from the two campaigns describe similar arcs from northwest to southeast, with the Seven Days closer to the city. Interestingly, in one of the ironies with which the war abounds, Gaines’ Mill, “Lee’s First Great Victory,” was fought over much the same ground as his last, Cold Harbor. “Bloody ground” is an apt description, with 15,000 casualties from the first and 18,000 from the second. Many of the soldiers who fought in the second battle were veterans of the first. Some reported seeing human remains, disinterred from shallow graves by weather or scavengers, when they returned to their old battleground in 1864.

Antietam, the war’s bloodiest day, began at dawn; 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or captured. Gaines’ Mill amassed 15,000 casualties in a battle that only began midafternoon.
